Hamilton at the Victoria Palace Theatre - 16th May 2024
Hello everyone, and welcome back to my blog!
First, I want to say thank you for the incredible support you have given my previous post. I was truly overwhelmed by the number of views and the kind comments I received. Sharing such a personal part of my life felt quite vulnerable. Now looking back, I’m so glad I did it. It’s helped me feel lighter and more ready to take on the future!
As I’ve mentioned before, I work for a travel company that organises adult day trips and school battlefield tours. Part of my role involves experiencing the trips we offer firsthand, so I can better understand and promote our products to customers. This year, I’ve been fortunate enough to experience a wide range of West End shows, day trips, mini-breaks, and attractions.
I set myself the challenge of writing about each of them, but I only made it as far as May with my last post about Mrs. Doubtfire: The Musical (you can check it out on my page if you haven’t already!). So far this year, I’ve been on 13 different trips. As you can imagine, that’s a lot of writing to catch up on! I plan to write more blog posts during the winter months when there are fewer trips for me to go on and I can sit back with my laptop and a nice hot chocolate!
Today’s blog is about the incredible West End show Hamilton, which I saw at the Victoria Palace Theatre in London. This time, I went solo – something I’ve always encouraged others to do at least once in their lifetime. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience!
I started my day early, catching the coach from work, and after a few stops, we arrived in London around noon. The theatre was conveniently located near Piccadilly Circus and Buckingham Palace, so I took the opportunity to enjoy a nice walk around the area to find lunch before the show. Being a picky eater, I often stick to familiar options when eating out, so I grabbed a chicken and salad baguette from a nearby Subway.
Unfortunately, the weather was dreadful – it was pouring rain, I got completely soaked. The weather app had well and truly done me dirty so I was dressed in a jumper and didn’t have an umbrella. Luckily, I found cover inside Subway, where I eat my lunch while reading my eBook in peace. Despite being in the heart of London, it felt surprisingly calm.
After lunch, I made my way to the theatre for the 2pm performance. I joined the long line to enter, I had a pre booked ticket so it was relatively easy. My seat was in the stalls, about eight rows from the stage – the perfect spot. It wasn’t too close so I didn’t have to stretch my neck but it was still close enough to see everything clearly. The theatre was very strict about its no-camera policy as most places are, so I couldn’t take any photos during the show. I managed to snap a few before it started.
The Story Behind Hamilton Alexander Hamilton, whose face appears on the $10 bill in the U.S., led a fascinating life. Born in 1755 on the Caribbean island of Nevis, he moved to New York as a teenager to pursue an education. His interest in politics led him to become a soldier, statesman, and scholar, helping to lay the foundations of the U.S. legal system. During the American Revolution, Hamilton rose through the ranks and played a key role in the victory at Yorktown, which ultimately ended the war. Afterward, he was appointed the first U.S. Secretary of the Treasury by George Washington. Tragically, Hamilton’s life was cut short when he was killed in a duel by political rival Aaron Burr in 1804, at just 49 years old.
I really enjoyed the Hamilton production. The actors were fantastic, bringing the historical characters to life in a way that was easy to follow, which was great considering I did not know much about Hamilton’s story before the show. Of course, the singing was phenomenal, and the costumes and stage design were incredibly detailed. This is definitely something you can only witness at the west end! By the end of the show, I felt like I had learnt something new.
After the performance, we boarded the coach to head home. I spent most of the journey relaxing and catching up on my eBook. It was lovely watching the hustle and bustle of the city fade away behind me.
Overall, it was a wonderful day, and I highly recommend seeing a West End show if you get the chance. For me, seeing Hamilton was not only a great experience but also an educational one. Since it’s such a popular show, being able to see it for myself helped me better understand it, which will make it easier for me to recommend to our customers.
Thank you for reading, I look forward to sharing my next trip with you soon!
