Hello, welcome back to my blog!!
Today I would like to talk about my recent visit to Kew Gardens for their Christmas at Kew event!
There’s something about Christmas at Kew that just hits differently. The second you step onto the illuminated trail, it feels like you’ve walked straight into a festive daydream. Kew Gardens is beautiful all year round — it’s known for its huge collection of plants, amazing greenhouses and stunning landscapes — but at Christmas, it turns into something completely magical. Between the lights, music and winter atmosphere, it honestly feels like the whole place comes alive.
✨ First Impressions at Kew Gardens
We went in through the Elizabeth Gate, where staff were scanning tickets and pointing everyone in the right direction. It was around 5pm, so the sky was getting dark but not pitch black yet — perfect timing for the lights.
The short walk to the start of the trail was already festive. There were Christmas images projected onto the pavement which was such a cute touch and instantly put us in the Christmas mood. Everything was well lit and easy to follow and stewards were dotted around to keep everyone moving.

Right at the start there were toilets and a couple of food/drink stalls. I grabbed a hot chocolate straight away — with cream and marshmallows, obviously. I then headed off onto the trail. It felt like the perfect way to warm up before the walk.
🌲 The Illuminated Trail Experience
The trail is roughly 3km long and took us around two hours, it really depends how often you stop. Some people were taking photos constantly, others were stopping for food and some were just slowly strolling along soaking everything in. There’s no time limit, which makes the whole thing feel relaxed instead of rushed.
Each part of the trail had its own theme and its own music. The trees and bushes were lit up in different colours and every turn had something new to look at. Kew is a huge place with tons of rare plants and scenic areas, so seeing it all glowing and decorated felt really special.
The music was all Christmas themed — classics like Walking in the Air — which made the whole experience feel cosy and nostalgic. At times it honestly felt like being a kid again, when Christmas was the most magical thing ever.
There were loads of food options along the trail too: pizza, burgers, waffles, sausage rolls… it smelled incredible everywhere you went. Families were stopping for snacks, couples were taking selfies — the whole atmosphere was just really cheerful and Christmassy.
🎶 Light, Sound & Spectacle
There were loads of interactive bits, which made the trail more fun than just a walk. There was a kids’ disco, a dance floor, and a section with hanging lights you could walk through. The light arch was probably the most popular photo spot — everyone stopped there for selfies.
What I loved most was how much thought clearly went into everything. Even the small details were amazing. In one area, the lights were dimmed because it’s where badgers live, which shows how much Kew cares about wildlife and the environment. It’s not just a pretty trail — it’s still a working botanical garden trying to protect nature.
Fairy lights, projected images on the paths, bright displays — the whole trail was well lit and easy to navigate. There were also toilets along the route (massive bonus!), plus shops and food stalls, so it didn’t feel like a never-ending walk with no breaks.
🍫 Festive Food & Drinks
Food and drink prices were on the higher side, but that’s pretty standard for London events. The good news is there was loads to choose from: hotdogs, Greek food, pizza, burgers, cakes, sausage rolls… basically anything you’d want on a winter evening.
Inside the café there were turkey sandwiches, mince pies and other Christmassy bits. Drinks included mulled wine, hot chocolate, cocktails, beer and the usual soft drinks and coffees.
There was even a marshmallow-toasting stand, which looked really fun for families. I didn’t stop there (trying to be healthier!) but it looked cute.
I had a sausage roll and coffee toward the end — I’d skipped lunch so the food stalls were a lifesaver!
📸 Family Fun & Photo Spots
If you love taking photos, this trail is heaven. There was a huge light-up chair, a spot where you could take photos with Santa, tunnels of lights, and tons of glowing trees and decorations.
It’s definitely family-friendly, but the trail is long, so if you’re bringing little ones, a pushchair is a must. There were loads of interactive areas for kids and they all looked like they were having the best time.
The trail is mostly flat and easy to walk, but because it’s dark, it’s worth watching your step. There are barriers around certain areas like the Palm House, so just be mindful.
🧣 What to Wear & Practical Tips
It rained on and off when we went and parts were muddy, so I’d 100% recommend trainers or wellies. The walk is long, so comfy shoes are a must even if it’s dry.
Going around 5pm worked really well — it was dark enough for the lights to look magical, but not so dark that you couldn’t see where you were walking.
If you’re planning to drive to Kew Gardens, it’s worth knowing that onsite parking is very limited. There is a car park at Brentford Gate, but spaces are first-come, first-served and can fill up quickly, especially during busy evenings or special events like Christmas at Kew.
Parking costs around £9 for the day and there are free spaces for blue badge holders. Because of this, I’d recommend using public transport if you can — the gardens are easy to reach by train, tube, or bus, which can save you the stress of hunting for a spot.
🌈 The Palm House Finale
The Palm House was honestly the highlight of the entire night. The light show was bright, colourful and perfectly synced with the music. Snowflake projections moved across the huge glass building and reflections danced across the water in front of it. Photos don’t even come close to showing how stunning it was in person — it really felt like the perfect way to end the trail.
Christmas at Kew isn’t just a light trail — it feels like an escape from the everyday rush. Whether you’re walking under glowing arches, sipping a hot chocolate, or just taking in the atmosphere, it’s the kind of experience that puts you in a proper festive mood. It’s magical, welcoming and perfect for families, couples, or anyone who loves Christmas. If you’re looking for a winter day (or evening!) out that feels truly special, Kew Gardens is definitely worth it.
I really enjoyed my evening at Kew and took some lovely photos!
