Hey guys, welcome back to my blog!
Today, I want to talk about something we’ve all experienced at some point: negative people in our lives. Whether it’s a family member who makes you feel like the odd one out, an ex, or even a so-called friend, these people can take a toll on your happiness and wellbeing.
Some ways negative people can impact your life include:
Trying to control you
Disregarding your boundaries
Taking without giving
Always thinking they’re right
Playing the victim
Avoiding accountability
One motto I love to live by is: “Kill ’em with kindness.” With that in mind, here are my top five tips for removing negative influences and putting yourself first again.
1. Decide that YOU are worth it
When you start feeling drained, frustrated, or just plain exhausted by certain people, it’s a sign that it’s time to put yourself first. You deserve to work towards your goals and become the person you want to be. Reflect on how keeping negative people around impacts your happiness and growth. It’s never too late to try something new—whether that’s a hobby, a dream, or simply focusing on your own well-being. Prioritize yourself.
2. Identify the negative people
Pay attention to those who affect your other relationships, invade your space, or drain your energy. If someone consistently makes you feel bad, it’s time to reassess their place in your life. Sometimes the truth can sting, but acknowledging it is the first step toward change. Negative people can impact everything—from your mental health to your eating habits and self-worth. Notice the red flags early and step away before it becomes overwhelming.
3. Let them go by establishing boundaries
Boundaries are essential for your mental and emotional health. If someone doesn’t respect your boundaries, they’re not respecting you. Make a clear list of your limits and communicate them firmly but respectfully. Never compromise your happiness for someone else. Those who truly care about you will appreciate your boundaries and make an effort to respect them. Protecting your well-being is not selfish—it’s necessary.
4. Remind yourself daily why—and don’t feel guilty
It may sound simple, but the power of belief is incredible. Remind yourself daily that you are in control of your life, your thoughts, and your actions. Letting go of negative people isn’t abandoning them—it’s giving them the space to find their own path while you focus on yours. Never feel guilty for putting yourself first. Life has a way of reconnecting people when the timing is right, but until then, focus on your own journey.
5. Bring in the positive
Positive vibes only! Some people are in our lives temporarily to teach us lessons—and that’s perfectly okay. Just like we leave one school to move to the next, sometimes we must let go of people who no longer serve our growth. Every time a door closes, another opens.
Invest in yourself and your happiness. This could be as simple as going for a daily walk, journaling, cutting down on social media, or baking something you love. Surround yourself with people who lift you up, encourage your goals, and support your dreams. The energy of the people around you shapes the energy of your life—so choose wisely!
I hope this blog helps you realise that you are worth so much more than you may think!
Keep an eye out for my next post.
Take care,
Chloe x
